Sample library organizer · desktop app

Your sample library, finally searchable.

Oh a Comber scans the folders you already have and turns them into a fast, filterable library. It never moves, renames, or rewrites a file.

A Finder window: dozens of nested sample-pack folders with cryptic filenames
Slot: the before shot, raw pack folders in a file browser (assets/img/comber-before.png)
The Oh a Comber library: the same samples in a sortable list with type badges, BPM, and a waveform player
Slot: the after shot, the same library scanned and filtered with one sample playing (assets/img/comber-after.png)

Why I built this

Twenty packs deep, I had the same folder every producer has: thousands of one-shots with names like SD_808_F#_140. I knew the sound I wanted was in there. I just couldn't find it. The sample managers I tried wanted to import everything into a library of their own, and I didn't want my folders touched. So I built one that reads what the filenames and metadata already say, and leaves every file where it is.

Scan Library

Point it at your sample folders, several at once if you like. It indexes .wav, .aiff, .mp3, .flac, .ogg, .m4a, .wma, and .aac, reading duration, sample rate, channels, and BPM from each file's metadata and name.

Indexing, not importing. Your folder structure stays exactly as it is. Exact duplicates are detected by content and hidden automatically, never deleted.

Slot: 30 s primary demo of a chaotic sample folder becoming searchable and sorted by type (assets/video/comber-organize.mp4/.webm)

Type & Genre

Every sample gets a Type: kick, snare, hihat, clap, cymbal, tom, percussion, bass, synth, keys, guitar, strings, brass, vocal, fx, or loop. Type is read from the filename and folder path. Pack names map to genres the same way.

It's transparent pattern-matching on the names your packs already carry, not a black box. You can predict what it will decide, and re-scanning a new pack takes seconds.

Slot: Type chips with counts, several active (screenshot, 1400×900)

Search & filters

Search matches filename, path, and pack. Stack it with Type chips, Genre, a BPM Range, and ★ FAVORITES. The counts update live.

"kick", 80–100 BPM, one pack name: six thousand files become five candidates while the last one is still playing.

The library filtered by search text, type, and BPM range simultaneously
Slot: stacked filters narrowing the list (screenshot, 1400×900)

Preview & audition

Click play and the waveform draws in the player bar; click the waveform to seek. Arrow keys walk the list and audition each sample as you move.

Auditioning is the whole job. You never leave the list, and you never stop listening.

Drag out to your DAW

Rows drag like files because they are files: dragging hands your DAW the original path on disk. Right-click reveals the file in Finder.

No export step, no copies, no managed library between you and the sound. Search, preview, drop it on a track.

Slot: 10 s silent loop of search, preview, then a drag onto a DAW track (assets/video/comber-drag-to-daw.mp4/.webm)

INSTRUMENTS

Load any sample onto the KEYBOARD and play it chromatically across 24 keys, or bank nine one-shots on the DRUM PAD. Play them with the mouse, the computer keyboard, or a MIDI controller.

Sketch the part before you commit the sample. C3 keeps the original pitch; the pads sit on MIDI notes 48–56.

The INSTRUMENTS panel open on the DRUM PAD tab, several pads assigned
Slot: DRUM PAD tab, pads loaded, one mid-flash (screenshot, 1400×900)

Watch it comb a library

Thirty seconds from "which folder was that in" to a filtered shortlist and a sample on a track.

Slot: 30 s primary demo, captions burned in (assets/video/comber-organize.mp4/.webm)

Questions

Does it reorganize my folders?

Never. Scanning builds a local database that points at your files where they already live. Nothing is moved, renamed, copied, or rewritten. Delete the app and your library is exactly as it was.

What happens with duplicates?

Files with identical content are detected by hash. One copy stays visible in the library; the rest are hidden from lists and counts. The files themselves are never touched.

Will drag-and-drop work with my DAW?

Dragging out of Oh a Comber is a native OS file drag carrying the sample's real path. It works with anything that accepts an audio file drop: Live, Logic, FL Studio, Reaper, or a plain Finder window.

Do I have to re-scan when I add new packs?

Yes. Click Scan Library again. Existing entries update in place and your favorites survive the re-scan.

Which download do I pick?

Apple Silicon for any Mac with an M-series chip, which is every Mac sold since late 2020. Intel for older Macs. Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac if you're not sure.

Will my Mac let it open?

Yes. Both builds are signed with an Apple Developer ID and notarized by Apple. No security warning, no right-click workaround.

Out now for Mac.

Free. Apple Silicon or Intel, signed and notarized.
